This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Active Directory directory service, Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM), and Active Directory Lightweight Directory Service (AD LDS). The vulnerability could allow denial of service if stack space was exhausted during execution of certain types of LDAP or LDAPS requests. This vulnerability only affects domain controllers and systems configured to run ADAM or AD LDS.
This security update is rated Important for Active Directory, ADAM, and AD LDS on all supported editions of Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008.
The security update addresses the vulnerability by changing the way Active Directory, ADAM, and AD LDS process malformed LDAP or LDAPS requests.
Recommendation. The majority of customers have automatic updating enabled and will not need to take any action because this security update will be downloaded and installed automatically. Customers who have not enabled automatic updating need to check for updates and install this update manually. For administrators and enterprise installations, or end users who want to install this security update manually, Microsoft recommends that customers apply the update at the earliest opportunity using update management software, or by checking for updates using the Microsoft Update service.
